Andrew’s Newsletter October 2015

Greetings! I hope you have had a well-earned respite in the holiday season.

A summer of serial crises has left the world shocked, if not stirred, into a state of anxious resignation. A Greek crisis "Act II", China's great stock-market fall, a sudden stand-off in the Korean peninsular, collapse in global oil and commodity prices, and on-going turmoil in Syria spilling over into a massive refugee crisis across Europe.

Geopolitical rivalry between US and China seems to be intensifying. Japan's revision of her peace-time constitution is as instructive as the estrangement from China of two other US regional allies – Vietnam and the PhilippinesThis is reminiscent of the kind of "re-balancing" and outsourced "buck-passing" as theorized in "The Tragedy of Great Power Politics(Mearsheimer, 2001). China has responded with a grand design of One Belt One Road, a  pivot to the West.  President Xi's first state visit to the United States signals the need for a change of tone.  However, the essential rivalry is likely to remain.

The following pieces may hopefully offer you some useful food for thought.
